QUEEN MARY 2 PICTURES TO BE PAINTED ON THE ISLE OF WIGHT

Artist to use Isle of Wight studio to create
7ftx3ft masterpiece

20 December 2002

One of the largest paintings to hang on board the Queen Mary 2, will be painted in Bembridge between 7th – 11th of January 2003, thanks to the generosity of local well known painter Cavendish Morton, (92 yrs old). Cavendish, who lives in Bembridge, has offered artist Rod Pearce the use of his studio to create the 7ft 3in masterpiece. The painting, one of three that Rod will create for Cunard, will feature views of the Solent with its yachting and commercial movements.

Rod said, “Being close to my subject matter allows me to recharge my batteries and capture the atmosphere of the Solent. I am very fond of the area and hope the passengers on board the QM2 will identify with the beauty of the surrounding coastline as they pass through this stretch of water”.

Cavendish Morton is looking forward to watching the development of the painting as Rod goes from a blank 7ft 3in x 3ft piece of honeycomb aluminium to the finished work. Rod will spend his time in Bembridge sketching the view from the Bembridge Ledge, catching many different aspect of light, before he settles down to laying his sketches down in paint.
