James Bemis was born in 1961. Following a career in photographic art, he has now turned to painting professionally. He works mainly in oil depicting the coastline around the UK. His painting is especially influenced by painters such as Walter Sickert, James Whistler, and Paul Henry.

James enjoys working plein air, sometimes under adverse weather conditions. His painting is concerned with expressing the feeling of a place, and creating a spontaneous impression of its character.

He has exhibited in the United Kingdom and the United States.
