Chris Hankey

Back to thumbnails.

Chris was born in Lancashire in 1963 and studied painting at Wolverhampton and Cardiff. He taught art at Bristol for a number of years until demand for his artwork meant giving up teaching in order to paint professionally in 2000. He paints mainly in oils, using microcrystalline wax, sand and grass to build texture.

The Cornish landscape and the sea are inspirational to Chris and allow him to explore his interest in man’s relationship to nature. Such is his desire to convey to the viewer the sensation of being part of the elements that he will continue painting on top of a stormy cliff as the sun goes down, battling to keep his easel weighted down to stop it blowing away. Even on still summer sunsets he will endeavour to allow the viewer to feel a part of the landscape by showing us a meadow from almost ground level through the grass.

His work makes up part of many private collections worldwide and is included in the corporate collections of Glaxo Smith Kline, William Reed Services.
