Lucian Freud

Back to thumbnails.

Lucian Freud was born in Germany on the 8th December 1933 and came to the UK with his parents in 1933. He studied at a number of art colleges including The Central School of Arts and Crafts, London and Goldsmiths.

In his early years he would paint inanimate objects such as a dead monkey or Chelsea bun, as he found it difficult finding sitters. Freud’s early work married together his interest in Surrealism with his intense observation of the world around him. This ability to lay down emotion was amplified in 1950’s with a change in brushes from sable to hogs hair; this allowed Freud to work the paint to mirror the movement of flesh.

It was while he was in Paris (1946) that he first stated etching, but he didn't return to it until 1982. Since then he has produced in the region of 60 works, mostly as with his paintings examining the human form in intense intimacy. Freud’s ability as a draughtsman lends itself to etching, each work indicates a probing investigation, their skin, discomforts and mood all caught by the printmaker in the execution of his craft.

Lucian Freud has received international attention over the course of his life. His works hang in many major public and private collections including the Tate, London.
