Michael Whittlesea was born in London in 1938 and trained at Harrow School of Art. His early years were spent working in publishing. Although he was painting during this time, Michael did not exhibit professionally until 1985. Currently Michael now lives and works in London.
Michael chooses an eclectic mix of subjects to paint, with many of his works detailing flowers, landscapes and various scenes of Venice. The inspiration for his work can be seen in ‘ordinary, everyday subject matter’ and in his desire to create the ‘unexpected’ in a painting. Michael is compelled to achieve ‘something out of the ordinary’ from a painting and his works evolve continually to ensure this is reflected. Michael has enjoyed huge success and has received numerous awards for his works.
Michael became an elected member of the Royal Watercolour Society and the New English Art Club in 1985 and he now exhibits works with both societies on a regular basis. His work has also been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition since 1985. He has been a prizewinner of the Singer and Friendland Sunday Times Watercolour Exhibition Prize and during his first year of exhibiting professionally he was awarded the Painter Stainers Award. Michael’s work is held in many public and private collections worldwide.
