Modern British Painters

George Devlin RSW, RGI, FRSA

George Devlin was born in Glasgow in 1937. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1955-1960 during which time he won a number of major art awards including the Haldane Scholarship, Chalmers Prize and Carnegie Travelling Scholarship. He continued his studies while painting and travelling in Italy and Greece, later crossing the Sahara and living in West Africa.

George's work is concerned with light and its ability to create mood or atmosphere. His descriptive style is influenced by the Scottish Colourists. Freshness and clarity is suffused with feeling as he re-invents the world through a strong use of colour. The elements melt into one another stirring the viewer to explore their relationship with nature, evoking a period of reflection. The quality of George's work induces dreams and it is understandable that the viewer feels the need to look again, first thing in the morning.

George Devlin's work is represented in many major corporate and public collections including H. M. The Queen, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Robert Fleming Holdings, The London Stock Exchange, Prudential plc, Scottish Television, De Beers South Africa, Arthur Andersen, United Distillers, The Arts Council, Essex County Council, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Leicester, Strathclyde, and Glasgow Universities, Argyle County Council, Edinburgh City Collection, Dutch Water Board, Teachers Whisky, Bank of Scotland, Argyll Group plc, TSB plc, Clydesdale Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Aberdeen Asset Management and the City Collection of Dinan. (The above list is not the complete list of collections.)

Sadly, George passed away in late May 2014.
