Modern British Painters

Benjamin Hope, NEAC,PS, RP, RSMA,ROI

Benjamin Hope took an unconventional route to a career in fine art. Born in 1976, the son of artist Jane Hope, he was introduced to painting at an early age. However, he decided against Art School and instead pursued Mathematics and Physics, culminating in a PhD from Cambridge University. After graduating from Cambridge, he had a spell as a ‘quant’ in the City in order to set up a studio close to Greenwich Park in South East London. Then in 2011 he took a 100% pay cut to begin focusing on his art full-time. He has since been placed in numerous open exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Show and the annual exhibitions of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Pastel Society, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and the New English Art Club. In 2014, he was awarded a Runner Up prize at the Lynn Painter Stainers Exhibition and First Prize at the Pintar Rapido plein air painting festival. 2018, Benjamin was elected a member of the NEAC and in 2020 a member of the RSMA.

Benjamin works mainly in oil but also charcoal, pastel, and pencil. His adopts quite a wide variety of techniques depending on the subject. His still life paintings can be very meticulous whereas he works much more quickly outdoors to capture light and atmosphere before it changes completely. He also paints portraits, often with just a palette knife. What unites these different approaches is a commitment to working from life whether it is on the street or in the studio. His paintings make up part of many private and corporate collections including, Montanaro and Hottinger Art.
