Valeriy Gridnev was born in Urias, Russia in 1956. He attended Sverdlovsk Art College from 1978 to 1980. He then spent a further seven years studying at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. On completion he undertook an advanced course of study at the USSR Academy of Arts. His graduation piece, an oil titled Early Years, in 1990, won him the prestigious Gold Medal.
Valeriys portraits and works of ballet dancers capture a moment in time. Working in oil, pencil, charcoal or pastel, each work communicates the character of the sitter or situation before him. Following a succession of exhibitions in the UK, Germany and the USA during the 1990s he relocated to the UK in 1999, to live and work. Over the last 14 years he has been elected to the Pastel Society, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and The Institute of Oil Painters and won a number of awards.
His work makes up part of many collections worldwide and can be found in many leading galleries in the UK.
